Acts 7:1 (ERVEN) Easy to Read - English

1 The high priest said to Stephen, "Is all this true?"
2 Stephen answered, "My Jewish fathers and brothers, listen to me. Our great and glorious God appeared to Abraham, our ancestor, when he was in Mesopotamia. This was before he lived in Haran.
3 God said to him, 'Leave your country and your people, and go to the country I will show you.'
4 "So Abraham left the country of Chaldea. He went to live in Haran. After his father died, God sent him to this place, where you live now.
5 But God did not give Abraham any of this land, not even a foot of it. But God promised that in the future he would give Abraham this land for himself and for his children. (This was before Abraham had any children.)
6 "This is what God said to him: 'Your descendants will live in another country. They will be strangers. The people there will make them slaves and do bad things to them for 400 years.
7 But I will punish the nation that made them slaves.' And God also said, 'After those things happen, your people will come out of that country. Then they will worship me here in this place.'
8 "God made an agreement with Abraham; the sign for this agreement was circumcision. And so when Abraham had a son, he circumcised him when he was eight days old. His son's name was Isaac. Isaac also circumcised his son Jacob. And Jacob did the same for his sons who became the twelve great ancestors of our people.
9 "These ancestors of ours became jealous of their brother Joseph and sold him to be a slave in Egypt. But God was with him
10 and saved him from all his troubles. Pharaoh was the king of Egypt then. He liked Joseph and respected him because of the wisdom God gave him. Pharaoh gave Joseph the job of being a governor of Egypt. He even let him rule over all the people in Pharaoh's house.
11 But all the land of Egypt and of Canaan became dry. It became so dry that food could not grow, and the people suffered very much. Our people could not find anything to eat.
12 "But Jacob heard that there was food in Egypt. So he sent our people there. (This was their first trip to Egypt.)
13 Then they went there a second time. This time Joseph told his brothers who he was. And Pharaoh learned about Joseph's family.
14 Then Joseph sent some men to tell Jacob, his father, to come to Egypt. He also invited all his relatives, a total of 75 people.
15 So Jacob went down to Egypt. He and our other ancestors lived there until they died.
16 Later, their bodies were moved to Shechem, where they were put in a tomb. (It was the same tomb that Abraham had bought in Shechem from the sons of Hamor. He paid them with silver.)
17 "The number of our people in Egypt grew. There were more and more of our people there. (The promise that God made to Abraham was soon to come true.)
18 Then a different king began to rule Egypt, one who knew nothing about Joseph.
19 This king tricked our people. He treated them badly, making them leave their children outside to die.
20 "This was the time when Moses was born. He was a very beautiful child, and for three months his parents took care of him at home.
21 When they put him outside, Pharaoh's daughter took him. She raised him as her own son.
22 The Egyptians taught Moses everything they knew. He was powerful in all he said and did.
23 "When Moses was about 40 years old, he decided to visit his own people, the people of Israel.
24 He saw one of them being mistreated by an Egyptian, so he defended him. Moses hit the Egyptian to pay him back for hurting the man. He hit him so hard that it killed him.
25 Moses thought that his people would understand that God was using him to save them. But they did not understand.
26 "The next day, Moses saw two of his own people fighting. He tried to make peace between them. He said, 'Men, you are brothers! Why are you trying to hurt each other?'
27 The man who was hurting the other one pushed Moses away and said to him, 'Did anyone say you could be our ruler and judge?
28 Will you kill me just as you killed that Egyptian yesterday?'
29 When Moses heard him say this, he left Egypt. He went to live in the land of Midian, where he was a stranger. During the time he lived there, he had two sons.
30 "Forty years later Moses was in the desert near Mount Sinai. An angel appeared to him in the flame of a burning bush.
31 When Moses saw this, he was amazed. He went near to look closer at it. He heard a voice; it was the Lord's.
32 The Lord said, 'I am the same God your ancestors had—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. ' Moses began to shake with fear. He was afraid to look at the bush.
33 "The Lord said to him, 'Take off your sandals, because the place where you are now standing is holy ground.
34 I have seen my people suffer much in Egypt. I have heard my people crying and have come down to save them. Come now, Moses, I am sending you back to Egypt.'
35 "This Moses was the one his people said they did not want. They said, 'Did anyone say you could be our ruler and judge?' But he is the one God sent to be a ruler and savior. God sent him with the help of an angel, the one Moses saw in the burning bush.
36 So Moses led the people out of Egypt. He worked wonders and miraculous signs in Egypt, at the Red Sea, and then in the desert for 40 years.
37 "This is the same Moses who said these words to the people of Israel: 'God will give you a prophet. That prophet will come from among your own people. He will be like me.'
38 This same Moses was with the gathering of God's people in the desert. He was with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and he was with our ancestors. He received life-giving words from God to give to us.
39 "But our ancestors did not want to obey Moses. They rejected him. They wanted to go back to Egypt again.
40 They said to Aaron, 'Moses led us out of the country of Egypt. But we don't know what has happened to him. So make some gods to go before us and lead us.'
41 So the people made an idol that looked like a calf. Then they brought sacrifices to it. They were very happy with what they had made with their own hands.
42 But God turned against them and let them continue worshiping the army of false gods in the sky. This is what God says in the book that contains what the prophets wrote: 'People of Israel, you did not bring me blood offerings and sacrifices in the desert for 40 years;
43 You carried with you the tent for worshiping Moloch and the image of the star of your god Rephan. These were the idols you made to worship. So I will send you away beyond Babylon.'
44 "The Holy Tent was with our ancestors in the desert. God told Moses how to make this tent. He made it like the plan that God showed him.
45 Later, Joshua led our ancestors to capture the lands of the other nations. Our people went in and God made the other people go out. When our people went into this new land, they took with them this same tent. Our people received this tent from their fathers, and our people kept it until the time of David.
46 God was very pleased with David. He asked God to let him build a Temple for the people of Jacob.
47 But Solomon was the one who built the Temple.
48 "But the Most High God does not live in houses built by human hands. This is what the prophet writes:
49 'The Lord says, Heaven is my throne, and the earth is where I rest my feet. So do you think you can build a house for me? Do I need a place to rest?
50 Remember, I made all these things!'"
51 Then Stephen said, "You stubborn Jewish leaders! You refuse to give your hearts to God or even listen to him. You are always against what the Holy Spirit wants you to do. That's how your ancestors were, and you are just like them!
52 They persecuted every prophet who ever lived. They even killed those who long ago said that the Righteous One would come. And now you have turned against that Righteous One and killed him.
53 You are the people who received God's law, which he gave you through his angels. But you don't obey it!"
54 When those in the council meeting heard this, they became very angry. They were so mad they were grinding their teeth at him.
55 But Stephen was full of the Holy Spirit. He looked up into heaven and saw the glory of God. And he saw Jesus standing at God's right side.
56 Stephen said, "Look! I see heaven open. And I see the Son of Man standing at God's right side."
57 Everyone there started shouting loudly, covering their ears with their hands. Together they all ran at Stephen.
58 They took him out of the city and began throwing stones at him. The men who told lies against Stephen gave their coats to a young man named Saul.
59 As they were throwing the stones at him, Stephen was praying. He said, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!"
60 He fell on his knees and shouted, "Lord, don't blame them for this sin!" These were his last words before he died.

4 Then G5119 ADV came G1831 V-2AAP-NSM he out of G1537 PREP the land G1093 N-GSF of the Chaldeans G5466 N-GPM , and dwelt G2730 V-AAI-3S in G1722 PREP Haran G5488 N-PRI : and from thence G2547 ADV-C , when his G3588 T-ASM father G3962 N-ASM was dead G599 V-2AAN , he removed G3351 V-AAI-3S him G846 P-ASM into G1519 PREP this G3588 T-ASF land G1093 N-ASF , wherein G1519 PREP ye G5210 P-2NP now G3568 ADV dwell G2730 V-PAI-2P .
5 And G2532 CONJ he gave G1325 V-AAI-3S him G846 P-DSM none G3756 PRT-N inheritance G2817 N-ASF in G1722 PREP it , no G846 P-DSF , not G3761 ADV so much as to set his foot on N-ASN : yet G2532 CONJ he promised G1861 V-ADI-3S that he would give G1325 V-2AAN it G846 P-DSM to him G846 P-ASF for G1519 PREP a possession G2697 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ to his G3588 T-DSN seed G4690 N-DSN after G3326 PREP him G846 P-ASM , when as yet he G846 P-DSM had G5607 V-PXP-GSN no G3756 PRT-N child G5043 N-GSN .
6 And G1161 CONJ God G2316 N-NSM spake G2980 V-AAI-3S on this wise G3779 ADV , That G3754 CONJ his G3588 T-NSN seed G4690 N-NSN should G2071 V-FXI-3S sojourn G3941 A-NSN in G1722 PREP a strange G245 A-DSF land G1093 N-DSF ; and G2532 CONJ that they should bring them into bondage G1402 V-FAI-3P , and G2532 CONJ entreat them evil G2559 V-FAI-3P four hundred G5071 A-APN years G2094 N-APN .
7 And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-ASN nation G1484 N-ASN to whom G3739 R-DSM they shall G1437 COND be in bondage G1398 V-AAS-3P will I G1473 P-1NS judge G2919 V-FAI-1S , said G2036 V-2AAI-3S God G2316 N-NSM : and G2532 CONJ after G3326 PREP that G5023 D-APN shall they come forth G1831 V-FDI-3P , and G2532 CONJ serve G3000 V-FAI-3P me G3427 P-1DS in G1722 PREP this G3588 T-DSM place G5117 N-DSM .
8 And G2532 CONJ he gave G1325 V-AAI-3S him G846 P-DSM the covenant G1242 N-ASF of circumcision G4061 N-GSF : and G2532 CONJ so G3779 ADV Abraham begat G1080 V-AAI-3S Isaac G2464 N-PRI , and G2532 CONJ circumcised G4059 V-2AAI-3S him G846 P-ASM the G3588 T-DSF eighth G3590 A-DSF day G2250 N-DSF ; and G2532 CONJ Isaac G2464 N-PRI begat Jacob G2384 N-PRI ; and G2532 CONJ Jacob G2384 N-PRI begat the G3588 T-APM twelve G1427 A-NUI patriarchs G3966 N-APM .
9 And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM patriarchs G3966 N-NPM , moved with envy G2206 V-AAP-NPM , sold G591 V-2AMI-3P Joseph G2501 N-PRI into G1519 PREP Egypt G125 N-ASF : but G2532 CONJ God G2316 N-NSM was G2258 V-IXI-3S with G3326 PREP him G846 P-GSM ,

11 Now G1161 CONJ there came G2064 V-2AAI-3S a dearth G3042 N-NSM over G1909 PREP all G3650 A-ASF the G3588 T-ASF land G1093 N-ASF of Egypt G125 N-GSF and G2532 CONJ Canaan G5477 N-PRI , and G2532 CONJ great G3173 A-NSF affliction G2347 N-NSF : and G2532 CONJ our G3588 T-NPM fathers G3962 N-NPM found G2147 V-IAI-3P no G3756 PRT-N sustenance G5527 N-APN .
12 But G1161 CONJ when Jacob G2384 N-PRI heard G191 V-AAP-NSM that there was G5607 V-PXP-APN corn G4621 N-APM in G1722 PREP Egypt G125 N-DSF , he sent out G1821 V-AAI-3S our G3588 T-APM fathers G3962 N-APM first G4412 ADV .
13 And G2532 CONJ at G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSM second G1208 A-DSM time Joseph G2501 N-PRI was made known G319 V-API-3S to his G3588 T-DPM brethren G80 N-DPM ; and G2532 CONJ Joseph G2501 N-PRI \'s kindred G1085 N-NSN was made G1096 V-2ADI-3S known G5318 A-NSN unto Pharaoh G5328 N-PRI .
14 Then G1161 CONJ sent G649 V-AAP-NSM Joseph G2501 N-PRI , and called G3333 V-AMI-3S his G3588 T-ASM father G3962 N-ASM Jacob G2384 N-PRI to him , and G2532 CONJ all G3956 A-ASF his G3588 T-ASF kindred G4772 N-ASF , threescore and fifteen G1440 A-NUI souls G5590 N-DPF .

19 The same G3778 D-NSM dealt subtlely with G2686 V-ADP-NSM our G3588 T-ASN kindred G1085 N-ASN , and evil entreated G2559 V-AAI-3S our G3588 T-APM fathers G3962 N-APM , so that they cast out G4160 V-PAN their G3588 T-APN young children G1025 N-APN , to the end they might not G3361 PRT-N live G2225 V-PPN .
20 In G1722 PREP which G3739 R-DSM time G2540 N-DSM Moses G3475 N-NSM was born G1080 V-API-3S , and G2532 CONJ was G2258 V-IXI-3S exceeding fair G791 A-NSM , and G2532 CONJ nourished up G397 V-2API-3S in G1722 PREP his G3588 T-GSM father G3962 N-GSM \'s house G3624 N-DSM three G5140 A-APM months G3376 N-APM :

23 And G1161 CONJ when G5613 ADV he G846 P-DSM was full G4137 V-IPI-3S forty G5063 A-NSM years old G5550 N-NSM , it came G305 V-2AAI-3S into G1909 PREP his G3588 T-ASF heart G2588 N-ASF to visit G1980 V-ADN his G3588 T-APM brethren G80 N-APM the G3588 T-APM children G5207 N-APM of Israel G2474 N-PRI .
24 And G2532 CONJ seeing G1492 V-2AAP-NSM one G5100 X-ASM of them suffer wrong G91 V-PPP-ASM , he defended G292 V-ADI-3S him , and G2532 CONJ avenged G4160 V-AAI-3S him that was oppressed G2669 V-PPP-DSM , and smote G3960 V-AAP-NSM the G3588 T-ASM Egyptian G124 A-ASM :
25 For G1161 CONJ he supposed G3543 V-IAI-3S his G3588 T-APM brethren G80 N-APM would have understood G4920 V-PAN how that G3588 T-NSM God G2316 N-NSM by G1223 PREP his G846 P-GSM hand G5495 N-GSF would deliver G1325 V-PAI-3S them G3588 T-NPM : but G1161 CONJ they G3588 T-APM understood G4920 V-AAI-3P not G3756 PRT-N .
26 And G5037 PRT the G3588 T-DSF next G1966 V-PXP-DSF day G2250 N-DSF he showed himself G3700 unto them G846 P-DPM as they strove G3164 V-PNP-DPM , and G2532 CONJ would have set them at one again G4900 V-AAI-3S , saying G2036 , Sirs G435 N-VPM , ye G5210 P-2NP are G2075 V-PXI-2P brethren G80 N-NPM ; why G2444 do ye wrong G91 V-PAI-2P one to another G240 C-APM ?
27 But G1161 CONJ he that did his neighbor wrong G91 V-PAP-NSM thrust him away G683 V-ADI-3S , saying G2036 V-2AAP-NSM , Who G5101 I-NSM made G2525 V-AAI-3S thee G4571 P-2AS a ruler G758 N-ASM and G2532 CONJ a judge G1348 N-ASF over G1909 PREP us G2248 P-1AP ?
28 Wilt G2309 V-PAI-2S thou G4771 P-2NS kill G337 V-2AAN me G3165 P-1AS , as thou didst G5158 N-ASM the G3588 T-ASM Egyptian G124 A-ASM yesterday G5504 ADV ?
29 Then G1161 CONJ fled G5343 V-2AAI-3S Moses G3475 N-NSM at G1722 PREP this G3588 T-DSM saying G3056 N-DSM , and G2532 CONJ was G1096 V-2ADI-3S a stranger G3941 A-NSM in G1722 PREP the land G1093 N-DSF of Midian G3099 N-PRI , where G3757 ADV he begat G1080 V-AAI-3S two G1417 A-NUI sons G5207 N-APM .
30 And G2532 CONJ when forty G5062 A-NUI years G2094 N-GPN were expired G4137 V-APP-GPN , there appeared G3700 V-API-3S to him G846 P-DSM in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF wilderness G2048 A-DSF of mount G3735 N-GSN Sinai G4614 N-PRI an angel G32 N-NSM of the Lord G2962 N-GSM in G1722 PREP a flame G5395 N-DSF of fire G4442 N-GSN in a bush G942 N-GSM .
31 When G1161 CONJ Moses G3475 N-NSM saw G1492 V-2AAP-NSM it , he wondered G2296 V-IAI-3S at the G3588 T-ASN sight G3705 N-ASN : and G1161 CONJ as he G846 P-GSM drew near G4334 V-PNP-GSM to behold G2657 V-AAN it , the voice G5456 N-NSF of the Lord G2962 N-GSM came G1096 V-2ADI-3S unto G4314 PREP him G846 P-ASM ,
32 Saying , I G1473 P-1NS am the G3588 T-NSM God G2316 N-NSM of G3588 T-GPM thy G3588 T-GPM fathers G3962 N-GPM , the G3588 T-NSM God G2316 N-NSM of Abraham G11 N-PRI , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM God G2316 N-NSM of Isaac G2464 N-PRI , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM God G2316 N-NSM of Jacob G2384 N-PRI . Then G1161 CONJ Moses G3475 N-NSM trembled G1790 A-NSM , and durst G5111 V-IAI-3S not G3756 PRT-N behold G2657 V-AAN .
33 Then G1161 CONJ said G2036 V-2AAI-3S the G3588 T-NSM Lord G2962 N-NSM to him G846 P-DSM , Put off G3089 V-AAM-2S thy shoes G5266 N-ASN from thy G3588 T-GPM feet G4228 N-GPM : for G1063 CONJ the G3588 T-ASN place G5117 N-NSM where G1722 PREP thou standest G2476 V-RAI-2S is G2076 V-PXI-3S holy G40 A-NSF ground G1093 N-NSF .
34 I have seen G1492 V-2AAP-NSM , I have seen G1492 V-2AAI-1S the G3588 T-ASF affliction G2561 N-ASF of G3588 T-GSM my G3588 T-GSM people G2992 N-GSM which G3588 T-GSM is in G1722 PREP Egypt G125 N-DSF , and G2532 CONJ I have heard G191 V-AAI-1S their G3588 T-GSM groaning G4726 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ am come down G2597 V-2AAI-1S to deliver G1807 V-2AMN them G846 P-APM . And G2532 CONJ now G3568 ADV come G1204 V-XXM-2S , I will send G649 V-FAI-1S thee G4571 P-2AS into G1519 PREP Egypt G125 N-ASF .
35 This G3588 T-ASM Moses G3475 N-ASM whom G3739 R-ASM they refused G720 V-ADI-3P , saying G2036 V-2AAP-NPM , Who G5101 I-NSM made G2525 V-AAI-3S thee G4571 P-2AS a ruler G758 N-ASM and G2532 CONJ a judge G1348 N-ASF ? the G3588 T-NSM same G3588 T-NSM did God G2316 N-NSM send G649 V-AAI-3S to be a ruler G758 N-ASM and G2532 CONJ a deliverer G3086 N-ASM by G1722 PREP the hand G5495 N-DSF of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM angel G32 N-GSM which appeared G3700 V-APP-GSM to him G846 P-DSM in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF bush G942 N-DSM .
36 He G3778 D-NSM brought them out G1806 V-2AAI-3S , after that he had showed G4160 V-AAP-NSM wonders G5059 N-APN and G2532 CONJ signs G4592 N-APN in G1722 PREP the land G1093 N-DSF of Egypt G125 N-DSF , and G2532 CONJ in G1722 PREP the Red G2063 A-DSF sea G2281 N-DSF , and G2532 CONJ in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF wilderness G2048 A-DSF forty G5062 A-NUI years G2094 N-NPN .
